July 2013 • Editor’s POV

Now that it’s officially summer, we can all take a collective sigh of relief. The hectic school and sports schedules are over, the days are longer, life just slows down a bit. While many of us look forward to the lazy, hazy days of summer, in our cover story, we share with our readers some Rosenberg-Richmond children who previously haven’t looked forward to summer vacation. They are the over 2,500 children who are part of the Free and Reduced Lunch Program at their schools and who otherwise, would go hungry. So, what do these children eat on the weekends and during the summer when there is no school lunch? That’s where a unique organization steps up to feed hope and nutritious meals to the kids: Lunches of Love. Read on page 12 about this phenomenal organization that began as an outreach of First United Methodist Church in Rosenberg. If you have some spare time this summer, stop by the church and help make a lunch. It is definitely something my children and I will be doing this summer. I hope you will join us.

I just have to tell you how proud I am of our High School Hot Shot this month, Alyssa Eaves. Alyssa is the daughter of one our long-time contributors Linda Eaves, and she graduated as valedictorian of Foster High School. And, she was named a National Merit Finalist. Way to go, Alyssa!

As you are out and about in Brazos, find some time to enjoy the July 4th festivities. Both Rosenberg and Fulshear are hosting family-friendly events complete with fireworks. Read about them on page 14. As we celebrate the birth of our nation, let’s also remember those who fought – and continue to fight – for our freedom. Yes, we live in the greatest country in the world, and it is thanks in large part to our military. God bless our military, and God bless America! Happy July 4th!

Absolutely! yours,
