May 2013 • Editor’s POV

Kolton and Kassidi Kaminski.

Some sixteen years ago, May became one of my favorite months of the year.  I had never given much thought to the month of May, other than to be certain that I sent my mother and grandmothers cards.  But, that first May when I had six-month-old Kassidi, and she and her Daddy made my first Mother’s Day extra special, May took on a whole new meaning.  Two years later, God gave me another blessing born in the month of May named Kolton.  Ever since those two came into my life, May – especially Mother’s Day – has been big at our house, and I hope it is at yours as well.  In this issue, we are helping our readers make Mother’s Day extra special with our Mother’s Day Gift Guide to help your little ones – and their daddies – find that perfect tribute to Mom.  So, if you are at a loss on what to get Mom, check out page 36.

While May is extra meaningful to me, it now has a more profound meaning since meeting Danny Quinlan. Danny is a young husband, dad and team roper, who four years ago, felt compelled after hearing a young widow’s story to create an event honoring our nation’s heroes.  Danny heard Navy SEAL widow Patsy Dietz share the story of losing her husband in “Operation Red Wing,” and the rest, as they say, is history.  Danny and his committed team of volunteers and sponsors created the US Navy SEAL Danny Dietz Memorial Team Roping and Bar-B-Q Cook-Off held annually each Memorial Day weekend.  Fortunately for us, Danny has selected the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds as the venue for this event that means so much to him and so much to those who serve and protect our country.

Danny’s story is compelling, and his event, a shining symbol of patriotism and pride in our military.  This Memorial Day weekend, take a moment to honor our nation’s heroes. While you’re at it, take the family out to the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds. You’ll see some world renowned rodeo champions perform, eat some great bar-b-q and meet Navy SEALs and their families who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.  As Rosenberg’s Mayor Morales said, “This event reminds us that freedom isn’t free.”  Well put, Mr. Mayor.

Yes, it’s Mother’s Day, so Happy Mother’s Day to all of our moms but especially to our moms who have raised heroes – the heroes in our community serving others every day and the heroes in our armed forces serving our country.  We salute you!

absolutely! yours,
