July-August 2017 – Exclamation Points!

Fired Up for the Fourth!

Summer is in full swing at absolutely! Brazos, and we are absolutely excited! Deadlines seem a little less looming, our schedules slow down a bit and we take some time to enjoy the important things: friends, family and fun!

Even though the dreaded word is in the title of our cover story – “school” – the story is actually about family and fun. Making certain our children have fun and remain engaged this summer so they can be back-to-school ready is important for children, and we have two experts share ideas for children of all ages from tots to teens.

For some fun with friends, join us at the Downtown Stomp in Rosenberg on August 5th. This event benefits the Fort Bend County Fair, and 20 merchants are participating with after hours shopping, wine tastings, live music and more.  And, of course, what could be more fun this summer than celebrating our nation’s birth!  There are several July 4th events in Fort Bend perfect for friends, family and fun, along with some delicious backyard – and patriotic – recipes on page 28.

I’ll admit that one of the things I love best about July 4th celebrations is the food. Erma Bombeck said, “You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4th not with a parade of guns, tanks and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.”

Just call me a patriot. Happy July 4th to all of our Brazos friends!

Absolutely yours,

Neil Andrew Banfield January 3, 1924 – May 7, 2017

On May 7th, one of my absolutely favorite gentlemen left us at 93 years young. Neil Andrew Banfield was nominated as a GEM of Fort Bend in 2014, and when I wrote about him, I called him a “dapper, quick-witted young man known for his generous spirit, kindness and just plain willingness to help.” I wrote a tribute to my friend, one of my biggest cheerleaders over the years, in the June 2017 issue of Fort Bend Focus available at www.fortbendfocus.com/june-2017-exclamation-points, and I received so many kind e-mails and posts. I hope you will take a moment to read about this extraordinary GEM.
